University Challenge Returns with Tough Questions

This week on University Challenge, hosted by Amol Rajan, contestants faced off in an intense quiz competition featuring challenging questions from various fields, including science, history, and art. The episode showcased Edinburgh University competing against Newcastle.

Music Round Confusion

During the music segment, Edinburgh correctly answered the initial question about jazz. However, they found themselves puzzled during the final song as it played loudly in the studio. While debating among themselves, the team’s captain incorrectly guessed the band was Blur.

Amol Rajan then revealed the correct answer: “No, it’s the Gorillaz.” Despite the confusion among the contestants, several viewers at home managed to identify the song. One user on X commented, “#universitychallenge Frank Zappa, Gorillaz. Wake up you youngs! I got them and I’m ancient!” Another chimed in simply with, “#universitychallenge gorillaz.”

Edinburgh Dominates the Match

Ultimately, Edinburgh University secured a decisive victory over Newcastle, finishing with a score of 200 to 105. Rajan noted that Edinburgh displayed remarkable strength throughout the match, describing them as a “formidable team” with a broad range of knowledge.

Recap of Early Struggles

This week was not the first instance of teams struggling with difficult questions. In last month’s opening round featuring UCL against SOAS, both teams found themselves at odds with a challenging query. Amol prompted them with: “In what present-day country was a territory that was given the name ‘Island of the True Cross’ by Pedro Álvares Cabral during a trading expedition to India in 1500?”

The question stumped UCL’s Doherty, who guessed Goa, while Mozayen from SOAS suggested Sri Lanka, neither of which were correct. The actual answer was Brazil.

Viewers can catch University Challenge airing on BBC Two every Monday evening at 8:30pm.
