Luis Diaz, the Liverpool winger, has finalized a transfer to Bayern Munich for a fee of £65.5 million. This move sees Diaz depart from Anfield, where he had two years remaining on his contract.
Bayern Munich triumphed over Barcelona in the race for Diaz’s signature. Initially, Liverpool turned down Bayern’s offers, which included an early bid estimated at around £58.5 million (€67 million). However, the Bundesliga champions returned with an improved offer of £65.5 million (€75 million), featuring performance-related add-ons. Liverpool agreed to the deal after determining it reflected the full market value of the player.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Liverpool stood firm against selling one of their key players. However, Diaz and his team expressed a desire to leave, indicating their intention as early as summer 2024. Despite the club’s efforts to hold onto him while analyzing the squad and market conditions, Liverpool eventually acquiesced to Diaz’s request to move.
Liverpool found themselves encouraged by ongoing negotiations with Newcastle forward Alexander Isak, even as they decided to let Diaz go. Attempts to extend Diaz’s contract fell through due to a disparity between the club’s offers and the player’s demands. After contributing to Liverpool’s 20th Premier League title, the club reluctantly accepted his request.
Diaz, who joined Liverpool in January 2022 for a guaranteed fee of £37.5 million (€42.9 million) and signed a five-and-a-half-year deal, leaves as the club has already signed Hugo Ekitike to bolster their attacking lineup.
