Plymouth Argyle is set to return to League One for the 2025/26 season, kicking off this weekend after two seasons in the Championship. Alongside Argyle, Cardiff City and Luton Town also make their League One debuts this year after relegation from the second tier of English football. Notably, all three clubs rank among the top four in bookmakers’ odds for the title.
According to Sky Bet, the title sponsors of the EFL, Luton Town leads as the 7/2 favorites. Following closely at 6/1 is Huddersfield Town, who finished 10th last season but have bolstered their squad with key signings. Under the leadership of new manager Lee Grant, the club now boasts players like regular League One scorer Alfie May, who joined from Birmingham City, along with Championship-quality additions like Marcus McGuane, Marcus Harness, and Jack Whatmough.
Cardiff City emerges as the third favorite at 15/2, following the appointment of Brian Barry-Murphy, a coach from Leicester City, as their new manager. Plymouth Argyle stands at 8/1, with the primary concern surrounding their roster being the absence of a striker with a proven scoring history.
The last season Argyle competed in League One was the 2022/23 season, where they clinched the title with 101 points under manager Steven Schumacher, who now leads Bolton Wanderers. Bolton recently signed striker Mason Burstow on a season-long loan from Hull City, marking their 10th signing of the summer. They are currently placed at 11/1, sharing this betting line with Blackpool, who have also made significant moves, including securing former Argyle striker Niall Ennis from Stoke City, and Stockport County, finalists in the League One play-off semi-finals last May.
Reading follows next in the betting with odds of 14/1, while Wycombe Wanderers and Leyton Orient are offered at 18/1 and 20/1, respectively. The odds continue with Barnsley and Wigan Athletic, both at 22/1, ahead of Argyle’s opening match at Home Park this Saturday.
The complete list of League One title odds includes Rotherham United at 25/1, Bradford City and Peterborough United at 28/1, Lincoln City at 33/1, Mansfield Town at 40/1, Stevenage at 50/1, Burton Albion and Port Vale at 66/1, and Exeter City and Northampton Town at 80/1. AFC Wimbledon is the longshot at 100/1.
